5 Tips to Help You Relax During Dental Visits

Diane Mason

Many people have problems relaxing during dental visits, even during regular teeth-cleaning appointments. If this is something you have a problem with, you should consider the following five tips to help you relax.

  1. Keep Your Eyes Open: Even though you may feel the urge to close your eyes so that you cannot see what is going on, it can actually help you to better relax to leave your eyes open. This is because when your eyes are open, you are being stimulated by the environment, which draws attention away from any pain or discomfort you are experiencing. Plus, you are much less likely to clench when your eyes are left open, which helps your dentist to get the work done more quickly, since your jaw will be relaxed, and it will be easier for your dentist to maneuver around in your mouth.
  2. Keep Breathing: Although it may be difficult to do so, it's important to concentrate on your breathing. This is going to help you relax and avoid clenching as well. If it's easier, focus on breathing in and out of your nose. Don't worry about your dentist. Your dentist knows that you have to breathe, especially if your dentist is aware of your inability to relax during dental appointments.
  3. Listen to Music: If there is any drilling involved because you are getting a filling or other dental work done, ask if you can bring your mp3 player so that you can listen to music. Most dentists will allow this. This helps block out the loud sounds of the drill, which makes it easier for you to relax.
  4. Don't be Afraid to Stop Your Dentist: If you are uncomfortable at all while your dentist is working on your teeth, don't be afraid to stop them by raising your hand or telling them, if you are able to talk. Your dentist wants you to be comfortable, so they will let you have a break or will ask what they can do to help you relax more.
  5. Always Tell Your Dentist About Being Nervous: Dentists deal with all kinds of patients on a daily basis, and it's not uncommon for them to have patients who are nervous and unable to relax. It's important that you address your concern about this with your dentist before getting started. They will be able to help you and may even prescribe numbing medications that they normally wouldn't with other patients so that you are able to better relax.

When you consider these five tips to help you relax during dental visits, the visits can be much easier for you and your dentist to get through. Find a dentist near you by visiting sites such as http://www.nwidentist.com/.

About Me
Understanding Root Canal Procedures

Hey everyone. My name is Jaheem Gherdley. I made this site to talk about root canal procedures. Root canals are usually performed to save broken or rotten teeth. My situation did not deviate from this norm. I was eating my favorite crunchy snacks when my tooth broke straight down the middle. I ignored this development until an infection set in deep in the root of my tooth. My dentist urged me to come right in for an emergency root canal to save the tooth and stop the spread of infection. The procedure stopped the pain and kept my tooth in place. From that point on, I decided to learn all I can about root canals. I will share the information I've gathered with you to help you understand the importance of this procedure. Thanks for stopping by.
