Dental Implants And Lingering Pain Issues

Diane Mason

You probably know that getting dental implants can be pretty painful, especially if you have a surgical procedure scheduled in the future. However, while a moderate amount of pain is normal, certain types of sensations are not. In fact, certain types of pain and soreness can signify a problem. Keep reading to learn about some signs that your pain may mean that you need to make an emergency appointment with your oral surgeon.

Swelling Returns

Pain during the first week after your surgery is extremely common. This first seven to ten days is when you will feel the worst sensations, and pain will start to subside afterwards. However, many people will experience something odd the first week after dental implant surgery. Pain will seem as though it is going away after a few day,s and then it returns a few days later. This means that around the fifth day after your surgery, you may feel soreness that is similar to the first day after the operation.

The onset of the delayed pain is extremely common and normal. However, if the sensation comes back and you also see swelling around the implant, then this is concerning. Swelling should reduce after a few days and not return. If swelling comes back or worsens, then this is a sign of an infection developing. Also, fluid retention around the implant may be an issue. Speak with your dentist immediately so an assessment can be made.

Pain Lingers Longer Than Ten Days

While every patient is different, many individuals will experience a reduction in pain about seven to ten days after the operation. In general, your pain may linger a bit more than someone else if your procedure is complicated or lengthy. Also, procedures like bone grafting, the placement of multiple implant roots, and sinus lifts can lead to a longer healing period. However, your pain at the ten-day mark should be minimal.

If you notice that the pain is not subsiding after about ten days, then this may be a sign that the healing cap is loose and needs to be tightened. Also, the implant root itself may be loose. This can happen if a large amount of tissue swelling places direct pressure on the root device. Pain can also indicate an issue with the bone, where the drill has caused damage to the point that cells are dying. This situation is rare, but it needs to be considered by a professional.

About Me
Understanding Root Canal Procedures

Hey everyone. My name is Jaheem Gherdley. I made this site to talk about root canal procedures. Root canals are usually performed to save broken or rotten teeth. My situation did not deviate from this norm. I was eating my favorite crunchy snacks when my tooth broke straight down the middle. I ignored this development until an infection set in deep in the root of my tooth. My dentist urged me to come right in for an emergency root canal to save the tooth and stop the spread of infection. The procedure stopped the pain and kept my tooth in place. From that point on, I decided to learn all I can about root canals. I will share the information I've gathered with you to help you understand the importance of this procedure. Thanks for stopping by.
