3 Dental Tips For Keeping Your Toddler's Teeth Healthy

Diane Mason

Taking care of your toddler's teeth is somewhat different than caring for adult teeth. The reason for this being that children often need a bit more coaxing to care for their teeth and because they sometimes need a bit more specialized care. Thankfully, there are certain dental tips that can be very helpful. Here are three dental tips for keeping your toddler's teeth healthy.

Purchase A Fluoride Mouthwash

One way that you can help protect your toddler's teeth is to purchase a fluoride mouthwash. This mouthwash is most effective to use at night because your child should avoid eating or drinking for a while after using it. This simply creates a protective layer on your child's teeth that help protect them from the foods they eat and the drinks they drink. There are fluoride mouthwashes that are made specifically for kids. These rinses are flavored well and safe for children to use.  Just make sure your toddler is old enough to know how to spit because it is very important that they don't swallow a lot of the mouthwash.

Give Foods That Get Stuck In Teeth During Meal Times

Foods that are more prone to get stuck in your child's teeth are the ones that often cause decay. It is because these foods sit in your child's teeth for hours, or until another meal is eaten or their teeth are brushed. Some foods that can easily get caught in your child's teeth are crackers, fruit snacks, cookies, etc. In order to avoid having these foods cause problems, you can instead feed your child these foods during meal times. When your child is eating a full meal, there is more acid and saliva moving around in their mouth, thus decreasing the chance of food staying stuck in their teeth.

Start Using Real Toothpaste When Your Child's Dentist Recommends It

When you first begin brushing your child's teeth, you likely use baby toothpaste that is basically a fluoride-free gel that is flavored. This toothpaste is safe to be swallowed and it helps get your baby used to toothpaste. However, as soon as your child starts getting more teeth, it is likely in their best interest to start using toothpaste that is more effective at cleaning their teeth. A great way to know exactly when to start using this toothpaste is to ask your toddler's dentist. They will let you know when the best time is to make the transition for your child. At this point you will move onto a children's toothpaste, but you will only need to use a very small amount on their toothbrush. The size suggested is that of a grain of rice.

About Me
Understanding Root Canal Procedures

Hey everyone. My name is Jaheem Gherdley. I made this site to talk about root canal procedures. Root canals are usually performed to save broken or rotten teeth. My situation did not deviate from this norm. I was eating my favorite crunchy snacks when my tooth broke straight down the middle. I ignored this development until an infection set in deep in the root of my tooth. My dentist urged me to come right in for an emergency root canal to save the tooth and stop the spread of infection. The procedure stopped the pain and kept my tooth in place. From that point on, I decided to learn all I can about root canals. I will share the information I've gathered with you to help you understand the importance of this procedure. Thanks for stopping by.
