4 Dentist Appointments You Should Make As Your Child Grows Up

As your child grows up, their body and teeth will change over time. Your dentist can help you keep up with those changes by providing proper care at each stage in your child's life. Here are four dentist appointments you should make for your child as they get older.

1. 1 year old

When your child is one year old, it's time for their first dentist visit. At this age, they're starting to grow teeth, and it's important to instill them with good oral hygiene practices from a young age. Taking them to the dentist now will help them get used to the routine as they grow up.

2. 5 years old

By the time your child turns 5, it's time for their first set of dental x-rays, according to Colgate. By this age, your child has their full set of baby teeth, and they're old enough to follow directions and hold still for the X-ray. X-rays can make some children nervous, so it's a good idea to take your child to a pediatric dentist. Pediatric dentists specialize in working with children, and they will know how to allay your child's fears.

3. 9 years old

At this age, your child has lost many of their baby teeth. Their adult teeth are growing in, and it's more important than ever that they take proper care of their teeth. When your child is 9, you should ask your dentist to explain to them the importance of brushing and flossing regularly. A pediatric dentist will be happy to show your child the correct flossing technique so they can keep their smile clean and healthy.

4. 14 years old

If your child has crooked teeth, your dentist may recommend correcting their alignment for health reasons. Alternatively, if the dentist doesn't think your child's teeth pose a health concern, you may still want to get them straightened for aesthetic reasons. At 14 years old, your child has lost all their baby teeth, and their adult teeth have grown in. This is a good age to begin orthodontic treatment. If your child is interested in getting braces, talk to your pediatric dentist who can refer you to an orthodontist.
