4 Reasons to Visit Your Dental Hygienist

Diane Mason

A trip to the dentist's office is not always to see the dentist or have a painful procedure done. Cleanings and checkups are also important, and it is your regular cleanings that will take you to see the dental hygienist most of the time.

Yearly Cleanings

Once or twice a year you should take a trip to the dentist for a checkup and cleaning. No matter how hard you work at oral hygiene, there is always some amount of plaque that can build up on your teeth. Beyond the plaque, the hygienist will check your gums for gum disease while you are there. If there are any early signs of problems, the hygienist will discuss the options with you. They may recommend a change in brushes, a different toothpaste, or more frequent care of some kind.

Removing Plaque

One of the things that a hygienist will do is to remove the plaque from your teeth. The process is not painful but involves scraping the plaque away with a metal tool. It only takes a few minutes, but for many people, this is the hardest part of the cleaning process to sit through. If it bothers you, talk to the hygienist about it. There may be an alternative method that they can use to accomplish the same results. A plastic scraper might be a better option for you if the metal scraping is a problem.

Flossing Between Teeth

Because people are not always good about flossing, the hygienist will often floss your teeth for you. There are people that do not like the feel of the floss between their teeth, but it is the only way to get the plaque and other material out of the spaces between the teeth. For people with teeth that are very close together, flossing may be painful, so talk to the hygienist and see if they can suggest a way to floss that is easier on your teeth and gums.

Fluoride Treatment

When you see the hygienist, they may do a fluoride treatment at the end of your visit. The procedure involves putting a small tray with fluoride in it into your mouth and keeping your teeth in it for a few minutes. There are all kinds of flavors that the fluoride comes in, so ask your hygienist if you can choose one from what they have available. This treatment only takes a few minutes and is painless, and it can help strengthen your teeth.

About Me
Understanding Root Canal Procedures

Hey everyone. My name is Jaheem Gherdley. I made this site to talk about root canal procedures. Root canals are usually performed to save broken or rotten teeth. My situation did not deviate from this norm. I was eating my favorite crunchy snacks when my tooth broke straight down the middle. I ignored this development until an infection set in deep in the root of my tooth. My dentist urged me to come right in for an emergency root canal to save the tooth and stop the spread of infection. The procedure stopped the pain and kept my tooth in place. From that point on, I decided to learn all I can about root canals. I will share the information I've gathered with you to help you understand the importance of this procedure. Thanks for stopping by.
