How Hygienists Treat Normal Staining On Teeth

Diane Mason

If you are in need of dental services, either for a cleaning or a checkup, you should expect a hygienist to perform the cleaning of your teeth. When the hygienist does this, he or she may tell you that you have some staining on your teeth. The staining that the hygienist is talking about is actually staining that is characterized by plaque, tartar, and calculus, and your hygienist may complete several different steps to remove this type of staining from your teeth.

The causes of the staining

You can have staining on your teeth for many reasons, but the staining that hygienists aim to remove is typically staining causes by a buildup of plaque. Plaque is something that leads to cavities and is often yellow or brown in color. The longer it stays on a tooth, the harder it becomes, and it eventually turns into tartar or calculus. As this happens, it discolors teeth even more. This is likely the type of staining that your hygienist will look for and aim to remove during your dental cleanings.

The risks of leaving it there

The reason that hygienists look for this type of staining and try to remove it is because it can lead to cavities on your teeth. Additionally, when stains are left on your teeth too long, they become harder to remove. Plaque also becomes harder to remove after it hardens and turns into tartar or calculus, and this is why your dentist will want to get rid of it at each of your appointments.

The methods used to remove it

There are several ways your hygienist will remove the stains, and these methods include polishing your teeth, using a prophy jet, and scraping it off with hand tools. Polishing your teeth requires a tool that spins and rubs the teeth, and this is a great way to remove staining when it is not too thick or too hard. A prophy jet is a water-spraying device, similar to an oral irrigator, and it removes staining by using pressurized water. Hand tools, including a scaler, are also helpful as they allow dentists to scrape off the stains.

Your hygienist might also give you tips to help you remove more of the staining on a daily basis so that it does not accumulate as much. If you would like to visit a dental clinic for a cleaning and checkup, schedule an appointment with a local dentist for a day that is convenient for your schedule.

About Me
Understanding Root Canal Procedures

Hey everyone. My name is Jaheem Gherdley. I made this site to talk about root canal procedures. Root canals are usually performed to save broken or rotten teeth. My situation did not deviate from this norm. I was eating my favorite crunchy snacks when my tooth broke straight down the middle. I ignored this development until an infection set in deep in the root of my tooth. My dentist urged me to come right in for an emergency root canal to save the tooth and stop the spread of infection. The procedure stopped the pain and kept my tooth in place. From that point on, I decided to learn all I can about root canals. I will share the information I've gathered with you to help you understand the importance of this procedure. Thanks for stopping by.
